Goodie Mob frontman and one half of critically-acclaimed Gnarls Barkley, Cee-Lo Green seems to be joining the ever growing list of rappers (yes, Cee-Lo is a rapper) having a go at cracking the big screen. In a movie based on the Wu-Tang legend Raekwon‘s life and coming of age in Staten Island (tentatively called C.R.E.A.M), Cee-Lo has been cast as Raekwon’s father by the man himself. “[Cee-Lo's] a good friend of mine,” Rae told XXL, adding, “he’s just one out of the greats that’s gonna be on the project.”

One half of The Cool Kid’s, Chuck Inglish, is being considered to play Raekwon’s younger self, however it is not set in stone. He says the film’s script is near-complete and that he’s, “definitely going for the theaters,” with it. “There’s a definitely possibility it’s a Lions Gate film.”

The DC Comics conveyor belt shows no signs of slowing down with this first look at the latest in what’s shaping up to be the best Batman series to hit the big screen so far. The Dark Knight Rises picks up from where The Dark Knight left off and promises to be an even bigger hit than it’s predecessor. I’m not sure if you can remember the hype wagon that came with The Dark Knight, but anything remotely close to that will ensure Christopher Nolan another box office smash hit, and with movies like Captain America and The Avengers set to come out before this one it looks like DC are going to keep winning when it comes to these superhero blockbusters.

Entourage Season 8

Here at PSA we love our TV shows, and none more so than our HBO; therefore, when we heard about the grand return of our favourite Hollywood sit-com Entourage we almost jizzed. Exaggeration, but you get the point. Never the less, here is the trailer; so if you’re a fan, get excited; if you have never watch it, use this time to catch up, and get to know. Produced by Mark Wahlberg, the story follows a group of friends trying to make it in LA. The new season lands on Sunday 24th, via HBO. Date for your diaries there.

Hot on the heels of the ‘How To Make It In America’ Season 2 teaser video, another front runner for my imaginary ‘Best New Series’ award, Boardwalk Empire drops it’s own teaser video with a slated return to our screens in September. This is another TV show with the PSA stamp of approval – and don’t just take our word for it, the Golden Globe for ‘Best Dramatic Series‘ as well as numerous other accolades should be testament enough. If that still isn’t enough to persuade you to give this show a go, Boardwalk Empire is directed by the legendary Martin Scorsese – and everybody loves good old Martin Scorsese.

In a nutshell, this is a period drama focusing on Enoch “Nucky” Thompson (Steve Buscemi), a political figure who rose to prominence and controlled the incredibly corrupt Atlantic City, New Jersey during theProhibition period of the 1920s and 1930s. However, as we should all know, politics and crime are often bedfellows, and Nucky’s apparent mob ties coupled with his lavish and exotic lifestyle begin to draw the suspicion of the authorities.

Check out this awesome show on Sky Atlantic, or if you’re like me and can’t wait for the UK to catch up to our neighbours across the pond, streams are very easy to find.

Incendies

Denis Villenueve’s “Incendies”, depicts some gritty realities of modern history, intertwined by an epic and mysterious quest. The story follows two twins, whom receive a strange request in their mothers will. The children, French-speaking Canadians, embark on a journey back to Quebec to uncover some dark family secrets.

Based on Wajdi Mouawad’s play, the plot knots and twists in an almost Shakespearian way, as the children’s sinister destiny unwinds. Their journey back into 21st century quasi-Lebanon is mused with episodes from their mother’s life during a gruesome civil war. Although fictional, the film, shot in Jordan, accurately portrays a turbulent and ambiguous religious war, paying homage to sensitive issues relating to refugees.

A little long, and at times overtly emphatic, the film is held together by the intertwining stories, and a fantastic performance from Lubna Azabal, who plays the mother. The depth of the performance is marked with moments of great dignity, powerful restraint and impeccable emotion, as an opera esc tragedy unfolds.

Incendies is a remarkable foreign language film, marked by its academy award nomination in 2011, one that we are fully endorsing as a must watch in 2011. If you can still make it to your local art-house cinema to watch it, then do it. If not, go forth and stream.

Alright, I won’t be saying too much about this one – If you read our earlier post about Game of Thrones not too long ago, you’ll already know the high level of esteem I hold HBO in. Take my word for it, if you’re a fan of PSA or anything we generally cover on our blog – from music to fashion et cetera – you will love this programme.

How To Make It In America is one of those shows that kind of, well, flew under most peoples radars – although if you’ve heard Aloe Blacc‘s massive tune “I Need A Dollar” then prepare to be acquainted with the show that helped make it the hit it is. It deals with a gang of New Yorkers in their early 20s, fresh out of adolescence, trying to make it big in the Big Apple as well as come to terms with the adulthood that has unexpectedly descended on them. Although there is no official confirmation yet from HBO, word on the street is that HTMIIA (because I’m not typing that out again) will be back on our screens in October. That leaves you with plenty of time to check out the first season and get to up to date with the show just in time for the restart.

Actor, writer, and all-r0und funny guy Sacha Baron Cohen is back with another attack on the box office in the form of his latest offering The Dictator‘. Not much has been revealed about the finer points of the plot, but if you’re familiar with his retired characters Ali G, Borat or Brüno, then you should know what to expect.

Loosely (and I mean ‘loosely’) based on a book written by the dictator Saddam Hussein himself, the log line from Paramount (the film’s production home) intimates that ‘The film tells the heroic story of a dictator who risked his life to ensure that democracy would never come to the country he so lovingly oppressed”. With a tale about a Hussein-like dictator who gets secretly replaced by a lookalike goat herder and now must find new meaning in a life in New York City, there are not many people who could make a story like this even remotely funny. However with Sacha Baron Cohen at the helm, we here at PSA have our fingers crossed for this one.

HBO, the legendary name alone demands your respect. With classic names such as The Sopranos, The Wire, Six Feet Under as well as modern heavy-hitters such as Boardwalk Empire and How To Make It In America (to name but very few), any TV geek worth their weight in sitcoms knows better than to treat any newly premiered HBO series with skepticism.

Game of Thrones is only 4 episodes in, but already I have a strong sense that this is a potential classic in the making. Initially described as “The Sopranos in Middle-Earth”, Game of Thrones is a dark and intriguing epic based on the ‘A Song of Ice and Fire series‘. By the way, don’t let the fact that this show is set in a medieval, fantasy realm put you off, it is very much only incidental to the series. Instances of magic are few and far between and you are far more likely to find parallels between Game of Thrones and The Sopranos (or even The Wire) than you will with Lord of the Rings. The “violent dynastic struggles” for the “Iron Throne” between feuding families closely mirrors the mafioso themes of The Sopranos. This show really isn’t for kids, with bloody carnage reminiscient of 300 interspersed with the odd graphic sex scene laying a platform for an engrossing tale of deception and betrayal.

The acting is by far and away some of the best I’ve seen in any TV series. Somewhat of a rarity in ‘classier’ TV programmes, the cast pretty much all speak with a variety of British accents, the fact that you probably won’t be able to tell who is and who isn’t a true Brit is testament to the skill of the actors.  Sean Bean stars as the main protagonist ‘Ned Stark‘ in a remarkably strong cast also featuring Lena Headey and Mark Addy, but so far the standout performer for me is Peter Dinklage – playing the role of the sharp-witted and hilarious dwarf ‘Tyrion Lannister’. The plot revolves around Ned Stark (Sean Bean), Lord of Winterfell and newly appointed right hand man to the King, suspecting foul play in the supposed death of his predecessor. An overseas threat to overthrow the King is also brewing in the form of the ‘Targaryen‘ siblings, looking to seize control of what they believes is truly theirs.

All in all, while it may  seem to early too tell, Game of Thrones is shaping up to be another notch in HBO’s belt. It has all the hallmarks of a classic in the making, and with a thoroughly absorbing storyline being coupled with stellar performances from the whole cast, this is definitely a series that’s worth kicking your ‘Only Way is Essex‘ addiction for.
